digital content

Q Via what method of delivery will I receive the "digital images" included with my event package? May I access them online or will I get a CD/DVD?

AYour "digital images" come in a few different forms and will be delivered, accordingly, via differing methods. Here's what is meant by that:

1)  First, all the "high-resolution" digital files (i.e., files designed for enlargements and are sized at 3,600 x 2,400 pixels @ 300ppi) will arrive via CD and/or DVD (just tell us your desired format).

Upon request, and at no additional charge, we'll be happy to make these high resolution image files available on-line by providing you the applicable URL's (most clients only want them via DVD / CD so we make the on-line public hosting of the large files by request only). The images are in their final form and ready for your to e-mail or upload to the photo sharing web site of your choice (we have some recommendations if you need info).

2)  The second class of images may be referred to as "low-resolution" content (i.e., files sized at 630 x 675 pixels @ 72ppi; designed for on-line viewing). Such low-resolution content exclusively delivered and published on-line and arrives in the form of an Adobe Flash Slide Show (e.g., just like the slide show you see on our home page).

3)  The third class of digital content may be considered the raw image files we shoot in the camera as well as the various intermediary files (e.g., Adobe Photoshop files, digital negative files, etc). It is this third class of content that we do not include or provide to clients. As described in our FAQ question outlining our post-production workflow, a wide array of barriers prevent us from feasibly providing these raw and intermediate files (read more about post-processing).

Q In what format will I receive the digital images?

A We will provide your images in the industry standard JPEG compression format.

This format (JPEG) truly is the "gold standard" when it comes to modern image files. In fact, when submitting your digital files to a photo lab (be it at Costco 1-hour, shutterfly.com, or the similar) they will with 99% certainty require that you provide them with JPEG files. Furthermore, when sharing the images with family and friends, the JPEG file format is nearly universally viewable on all file systems and browsers (e.g., Mac, PC, Linux, whatever).

Upon special request, and for a small additional charge, we can provide you the files in the newer "lossless" PNG-24 format. Simply contact us for more details.

Please note that we do not provide files in any format other than JPEG, or upon special request, PNG-24 (i.e., files in .CR2, .DNG, .PSD, .TIFF, or such are not provided).

QWill you put a watermark on the images?

AAbsolutely not! We're quite aware that many, many photographers place their logo or other various watermarks (e.g., text that reads "copyright," "all rights reserved," et cetera) on their images to discourage duplication and sharing.

As demonstrated in our event package pricing structure, we believe that payment for our professional skills should occur up-front in black and white as opposed to "hiding the ball" by offering a low teaser price and then nickle-and-dimeing you after the event is done and over (aka, "holding your photos hostage"). One of the most prevalent methods of such deceptive pricing practices is through the use of watermarks that effectively deface the photograph so horribly that the client is "forced" to purchase grossly overpriced digital images/prints/enlargements directly from the photographer which are free of the watermarks (e.g., $25 for a single 4" x 6" proof print, $200 or more for one high-res digital image file, etc.).

Amie Morgan Photography abhors this practice and takes no part in it. At first bush at our a-la-carte prices may seem to run contrary to our up-front pricing model; however, upon closer inspection you'll quickly realize that when you order enlargements from us directly we do not mark up the price and merely pass on our printing fees plus the time it takes to ensure the digital image is calibrated to the exact tone and color of the digital printer being utilized (a rather time consuming process that is never done at your local/online photo finisher). Additionally, the photo finishers that we use are professional-caliber, use pro-level papers & color correction technology, and are not available for general public access (for example, this is the reason why the paper we print on simply is not used at any of the major online printers such as snapfish.com, shutterfly.com, etc.).

The only place that you'll see our watermark is on our online slide shows (e.g., look at the slide show that displays on our homepage in the bottom right corner). Of course, any image used within your slide show is provided without watermark among the digital images on CD/DVD.

QI see that you refer to our digital content as "high-resolution," what exactly does this mean?  Would you be so kind as to provide the technical details of the file size & resolution?

A In 95% or more of the "high-resolution" images provided, they will have dimensions measuring 3,600 pixels X 2,400 pixels.  Additionally, in terms of resolution of the files, we save them at 300 ppi (pixels per inch). We use this particular file size because it is absolutely perfect for printing 8" x 12" enlargements natively (i.e., the photo lab does not need to up or down-scale the file...a process that degrades quality; nor does the lab have to crop the image).

Furthermore, this file size is of the 2:3 aspect ratio. This of course allows you to print an 8" x 12" enlargement as well as a standard 4" x 6" print without dealing is nasty cropping issues.

Please note that there is no typo when we say 8" x 12" (i.e., people often think we meant 8" x 10"). Not always known to clients is the fact that virtually all photo labs will print, without special order as a matter of fact, on the larger 8" x 12" paper size . . . just ask for it!

FYI, you many print larger files (e.g., 12" x 18" ... or, using typical cropping, 11" x 17") with these image files typically without any major degradation in image quality. However, should you have issues with such larger prints, simply contact us and let us know you'd like us to optimize a particular file for such an enlargement and we'll be happy to generate a new file for you.

As noted above, we provide our high-resolution image files in the industry standard JPEG file format.  However, not all JPEG files are created alike! Specifically, many unscrupulous photographers "dumb-down" the files and provide horribly compressed and degraded JPEG files, so bad in fact that one is basically prevented from making anything larger than a 4" x 6" print (e.g. level 3 or 4 JPEG files).  This is by no means the case at Amie Morgan Photography. We're proud to provide you with exquisitely high-resolution JPEG files (i.e., level 10 JPEG files).

Finally, in terms of the actual size such a file occupies on a disk, depending on the image of course, be expecting a size of between 1MB and 3MB.

QDisaster struck and I lost my original high-resolution digital images you provided me via CD / DVD (e.g., media destroyed by fire, theft, etc). By chance, do you happen to still have our original digital files?

AYou'll likely be in luck. We keep all digital content generated for a minimum of one year after the date of your event. Your files are burnt to DVD media and stored in our fire-resistant safe as well as compressed, encrypted, and uploaded to our secure file repository server located in southern California.

Please note that we do offer an optional on-line backup & "digital vault" feature should you'd like us to continue to hold your digital files after 1-year. Check out our a-la-carte pricing for details.
